PMDD Types

As there is not much literature on PMDD, a few of us got together and decided on these names for the different types of PMDD that we've seen and/or experienced:

  • Type 1 or "typical"
PMDD episodes occur about a week before menstruation and symptoms stop once bleeding begins.

  • Type 2a or "atypical type A"
PMDD episodes occur randomly, or what appears to be randomly.  Possibly tied to ovulation or LH surges, which occur multiple times during the menstrual cycle.  PMDD episodes can occur during bleeding.  No alleviation of symptoms once bleeding begins.

  • Type 2b or "atypical type B"
PMDD episodes also occur randomly but appear to be alleviated at the onset of ovulation rather than worsened with ovulation.

  • Type 3 or "progesterone intolerance"
PMDD episodes occur with the rise or introduction of progesterone.
