Frequently asked questions about PMDD

  • What are the symptoms of PMDD?
See this blog post about it.

  •  Can PMDD be diagnosed with blood tests or other exams?
No.  There is no blood test or physical exam or procedure that can indicate if a person has PMDD.

  • What types of doctors diagnose PMDD?
From what we've seen, only psychiatrists and gynecologists are willing to diagnose women with PMDD.

  • What kinds of treatment options are available for PMDD?
In a nutshell, the following options are available (and their effectiveness is dependent upon each individual.. what works for one woman will not always work for another) (see this list for more details):
    • Antidepressants or other psychopharmaceuticals (mood stabilizers, anxiety medication, etc.)
    • Hormone therapy (birth control, GnRH-a's, etc.)
    • Diet and/or herbal supplements
    • Psychotherapy
    • Alternative therapies such as light therapy and yoga
    • but only a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy or menopause (either surgical or chemical) can cure it
